Japonaise Cake is a beloved French-inspired pastry that has held a special place in the hearts of people in Coimbatore and Bangalore, India for generations. Introduced during the British colonial era, this unique cake became a cherished local specialty, found in only a handful of bakeries across South India. With its delicate layers of crisp nut meringue and silky buttercream, Japonaise Cake is celebrated for its irresistible crunch and melt-in-the-mouth texture. Interestingly, in Coimbatore, locals refer to it as the "Japanese Cake"—a name that is often more familiar to residents than its original French name, Japonaise. Over the years, this name has become part of the cake's unique local heritage and charm.
We are Akila and Ashwini, both born and raised in Coimbatore, India. Although we grew up in the same city, our paths never crossed until life brought us together in Tehaleh, Washington. It was there, thousands of miles from home, that we discovered our shared love for this nostalgic cake. Like many immigrants, we often found ourselves longing for the familiar flavors and memories of home. Inspired by those memories, Akila began recreating Japonaise Cake in her kitchen. What started as a personal project quickly became a favorite among friends and family. For Ashwini, each bite brought back cherished memories of birthdays, celebrations, and bakery visits in Coimbatore. United by our love for this treasured dessert, we decided to share it with others. And so, Japanova Cakes was born. Today, every Japanova Cake is handcrafted with care, honoring a tradition that has delighted generations while introducing it to new friends and families. Our mission is simple: to preserve a beloved piece of our hometown heritage and share it with our community here in Washington. From Coimbatore to Tehaleh, with love—one Japonova Cake at a time
